I am a newborn, maternity, and family photographer based in San Diego, California. The secret recipe to my family artwork is natural light, beautiful pastel colors, and candid emotions. It is an honor to be your personal storyteller and I cannot wait to share all the meaningful connections on my blog.
I'm SARAH Nguyen
As a newborn and motherhood photographer in San Diego, my goal is to ensure that parents are stress-free and comfortable during their sessions. The pre-session planning is crucial to my workflow because it helps with client communication so everyone is on the same page. As a result, my client’s vision comes to life and they receive beautiful images to decorate in their home.
This guide will help you prepare for a successful newborn photoshoot session. While these tips are short, sweet, and simple….they make a profound difference.
As a San Diego newborn photographer, I have witnessed the lives of many families after a new baby joins the fam. I’ve definitely seen some parents keeping their calm so well…you can’t even tell they’re lacking sleep.
The one true fact remains, you’re lacking lots of sleep (that’s by choice of course). To set you up for a successful session, let’s keep it as simple as possible.
Best tips for successful newborn photography = keep it simple
If you’re someone who plans to go all out and purchase new clothes for this special occasion, then we need to ensure it arrives on time. Not every clothing store ships fast like Amazon prime, especially during busy Holiday season. Let’s not make your delayed wardrobe a nightmare before Christmas! jk! OMG…I truly hope you don’t have to exchange the dress because that will definitely need more time.
I always recommend soft & neutral colors for newborn sessions to keep the image vibe light and airy. If you have any sentimental items, such as a family heirloom or handmade craft, consider incorporating them into the photoshoot. I’ve met some pretty talented mommas that can knit or crochet amazing things!
The creative session fee includes a digital guide filled with helpful tips to style for mom, dad, and the entire family. The pre-session meeting will also be useful when you are indecisive about what to wear, the SNP experience includes these extra steps to ensure that this part of the planning gets checked off in the early phases.
On the day of the photoshoot, please ensure that your baby is well-fed and has a clean diaper. If possible, try to keep your baby awake for an hour or two before the photoshoot time. This will likely allow them to be more sleepy through the actual session.
Parents, you know your baby’s feeding schedule best. We don’t always need a sleepy baby, but the most important is a happy baby by the time I arrive at your home.
Warmth is a great place to get started. Ensure the room, where the photoshoot will take place is warm nd cozy. Having a heater will also be very handy to maintain the optimal temperature for your baby.
My photography style is optimal when there’s a lot of natural light. Please take a look at your rooms and find a room with the most natural lighting, the bigger the window, the better.
I know you’re probably going to want to get a deep clean for your house, but honestly, it’s not necessary at all. Once you have selected the perfect room for your newborn session, just clear out the space in there. Remove any distracting objects such as:
If possible, I tend to use a variety of locations in your home to maximize your session. It may or may not include the living room, family room, kitchen, and/or front porch. The last thing I want to do is make you feel like I’m invading your space. I respect your privacy and will only take photos in areas permitted by you.
Setting the ambiance and atmosphere with relaxing and soothing music will help keep your baby calm and at peace.
Unexpected things happen all the time, but how you approach it and choose to take action is important. A baby can be sensitive when they don’t get to sleep in peace and that’s perfectly normal. If your baby becomes fussy, we can let your baby take a break.
Also, trust your photographer’s expertise and follow their guidance for a smooth and successful session.
As a courtesy reminder, your images were a collaboration between you and your photographer. Both you and your photographer made this possible. I always offer additional artwork or album designs to showcase to my families so they understand the importance of getting these images printed.
Yes, digital images are great for sharing on Instagram, Facebook, and text messages. However, I promise you they will be better printed and displayed in your home. It’s a constant psychological reminder to your children that they belong somewhere safe, loving, and irreplaceable.
Preparing for a newborn photoshoot can be an exciting and rewarding experience. By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to capturing beautiful memories of your baby’s first days. Remember to enjoy the process and cherish the precious moments with your little ones.
I’m proud to say that baby Emery had a successful newborn photography session. She’s absolutely beautiful, no other caption is needed.
